Get inspired

A great place to start when writing your own vows is to read or watch other people's. This will give you some inspiration for the kind of content you would like to include when you put pen to paper. When you find vows that resonate with you, consider why that was and find ways to encorperate similar ideas into your own work.

A word of caution, when gaining inspiration always ensure you maintain your own unique voice. There can be a fine line between being inspired by and copying another authors work, so make sure you put the ideas into your own words. This leads onto tip number two...

Be specific

One of the best way to speak with a genuine voice is to incorperate stories that are unique to your relationship. These don't need to be tales of grand romantic gestures, sometimes it's the everyday things your partner does for you that mean the most.

Perhaps they support you to pursue your hobbies, warm your side of the bed for you before you get in, or maybe they make the best cup of tea.

Sharing specific qualities like these make for heartwarming, relatable vows that will resonate with everyone. Being specific also helps you avoid using generic phrases that don't sound like you.

Reminisce

Spending an evening reminiscing with your partner can be a great way to reflect on the best times in your relationship and get inspiration for your vows. Maybe you remember the moment or place you fell in love or how you bonded over mutual interests. Sharing these memories is sure to make for heart warming content in your vows and help you explain your love for your partner.

Through the tough times...

Life is rarely straightforward and if you've been together for some time you have probably supported each other through good and bad times. You may not want to share specific experiences, but talking about the ways in which you have support one another through hardship could be a heartfelt way to talk about your love. Consider how you have helped each other over the years and how this has made you stronger.

Make unique promises

One way to make unique promises to your partner is to consider the ways you'll support them with their idiosyncrasies or pay attention to specific details of importance. Maybe you'll always turn their chicken dippers at precisely seven minutes or always keep the house stocked with Yorkshire Tea! Paying attention to detail shows how well you understand them and can be a great way to add some light humour into your vows.

6. Avoid perfectionism

Writing vows can feel like an overwhelming task and you may feel pressure to 'get it right'. Hopefully using the tips above can help you to speak with a genuine voice that reflects the love you feel in your heart. That said, unless your a professional in creative writing no one is expecting you to reel off a Shakespearian love sonnet. The most important thing is that the words were written by you.
